Eastern Energy Systems held a press conference yesterday, on January 12th 2010 at the Stony Brook Incubator in Calverton, to formally announce the installation of the 100kW wind turbine at Half Hollow Nursery in Laurel, NY. The Northwind 100 wind turbine rests on the property of the wholesale nursery that spans over 1,200 acres of the Riverhead Township. Manufactured by Northern Power Systems, it will stand at 121-feet to the nacelle and 156-feet to the highest point of the rotor. The wind turbine is expected to produce between 157,000 to 188,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year for an approximate annual energy savings of $34,000.
Attendees at the press conference included: Michael Deering, VP of Environmental Affairs for LIPA; Suffolk County Legislator Ed Romaine; Town Supervisor Sean Walter, Councilwoman Jodi Giglio, Councilman John Dunleavy and Councilman George Gabrielsen from the Town of Riverhead; Yacov Shamash, VP for Economic Development and Dean of the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences for Stony Brook University; Ed Thompson, VP for Advancement at Molloy College; Kathy Coley, Director of Communications at Farmingdale State College as well as Jeffrey Lang, VP & Director of Wind Technology and Albert Harsch, Director of Corporate Relations for Eastern Energy Systems.
In addition, Eastern Energy Systems is hosting an essay contest in collaboration with Stony Brook University, The Advanced Energy Research and Technology Center (AERTC), Molloy College and Farmingdale State College. All three collegiate institutions will award scholarships to the winner of the Renewable Energy Essay Contest which is open to all junior and senior high school students on Long Island.
